Nathan’s Story

As a child, Nathan went through the care system due to a disjointed family with domestic abuse, violence, family breakdown, a negative influencing environment full of drugs, crime and negative role models around him during his young life.

Within this he had very little mainstream education and guidance.

As he became an adult, his chaotic lifestyle with drugs and crime continued to spiral out of control which led to him going to prison. Once there, he learnt new ways of staying in control of his life by learning from the men he was living with.

Upon release his lifestyle became even more chaotic, with a continuation of drugs, crime, dishonesty, violence, selfishness, anger. He resented authority and the system which led to a lack of remorse towards his victims.

Nathan approached Tempus Novo in April 2021 looking to turn his life around and find a way into employment. After his assessment, he was put forward for an interview at Clipper Sheffield - which is now Boohoo!

He started as a picker in the warehouse and within 3 months of working he had been promoted to a Shift Supervisor. Nathan worked hard, which was recognised by the management team. After a discussion, he successfully applied to become a trainer for all new starters coming into the warehouse. Nathan also became a Peer mentor for TN in 2022 to help ensure that the men in Hatfield were given all the relevant information they required to progress further with their own rehabilitation.

In September last year, whilst still serving his sentence, Nathan started a BA Hons degree in Psychology and Health and Social care and has currently completed 2 years of studying in less than a year, showing his commitment to change.

Nathan classed the following statements as his final chapter this time around:

  • Engage with the services on offer.

  • A clear Motivation to change.

  • Faith in Jesus.

  • Taking opportunities when offered.

  • Being humble when chances are given.

  • Clear awareness of Triggers, Risks, Vulnerabilities.

  • Having positive role models around him.

  • Education, final year of his degree.

  • Motivation to love and help others.

  • Having a true belief in second chances and helping others to claim theirs.

  • Learning how to prioritise the right things and people.

  • Being the father, my children deserve and a good partner.

  • Learning to function in society as an active law-abiding person.

  • Working consistently and being aware of the importance around my rehabilitation.

  • Using my past to move me into a better future and help others.

I WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT THAT THE PAST DOES NOT HAVE TO DEFINE THE PERSON YOU CAN BE, IT CAN BE USED TO PROPEL YOURSELF INTO A POSITIVE DIRECTION.

I’M NOT SPECIAL OR DIFFERENT, BUT I HAVE A CLEAR WILLINGNESS TO CHANGE AND TAKE HELP FROM THE SERVICES LIKE TEMPUS NOVO, BUT ITS ALWAYS DOWN TO THE INDIVIDUAL TO TAKE THOSE STEPS.

“There is no doubt that having a good job with the support from my caseworker Fiona at Tempus Novo has made all the difference in me being able to make that transformation, from repeat offender with no hope, to where I am now."“
