Spend a Fortnight With Mel

Tempus Novo’s Dedicated Caseworker

Mel, a devoted case worker at Tempus Novo, offers a unique insight into her week filled with transformative experiences. In her own words and narratives, she unveils the extraordinary journey she embarks on every day to help those seeking a second chance at life.

Monday, September 4th

The week kicks off with Mel's crucial role: gathering weekly updates from the team. "This ensures that management is aware of the day-to-day running of the business," she explains. It also creates a platform for the team to "share each other's highs and lows, and offer congratulations or support where needed."

Later, Mel accompanies a young man from HMP Hatfield to a job interview at a GXO site. "This particular chap has been in prison since he was a teenager," she notes. His nervousness prompts Mel to provide a heartfelt pep talk. "While he was in his interview, I had a quick visit to some of the other lads that are working there," she adds, reinforcing her dedication to the well-being of all the service users.

The day ends on a high note as Mel recounts, "He smashed it, they offered him the job on the spot, and he starts on Monday! The smile on his face was a picture, and he grinned all the way home."

Tuesday, September 5th

Reflecting on a unique wellbeing day, Mel shares, "I went to the day with extreme trepidation – not only because this was something new, but because we are so busy at the moment." The day off, focused on mental health and self-care, proves to be an invaluable break from their hectic schedules.

Wednesday, September 6th

Mel spends the morning in the office, tackling admin tasks and conducting telephone assessments with individuals referred to Tempus Novo. She empathetically remarks, "All three were great, and after speaking to them and getting to know them, felt that each of them just needed that one chance."

In the afternoon, Mel attends a meeting at HMP Hatfield, highlighting the shared dedication of various stakeholders working towards a common goal: supporting inmates transitioning into employment.

Thursday, September 7th

Mel's day starts with an early drive to HMP Thorn Cross to collect another service user for a job interview. "This chap is now in his 30s, and has never had a job in his life, let alone been for a job interview," she observes. Her heartfelt chat with him during the journey helps boost his confidence.

Mel's interactions with other lads at the workplace further illuminate the positive impact of Tempus Novo. The highlight of the day is when the interviewee not only successfully completes his interview but is offered the job on the spot. "Today was one of those days that makes all the hard work worth it, and people like him are the reason that I do this," Mel passionately shares.

Friday, September 8th

After a busy week, Mel appreciates the opportunity to work from home, allowing her to catch up on emails and calls, ensuring she remains connected with the service users.

Week 2

Monday, September 11th

The week begins with the routine of collecting weekly updates, followed by a team meeting. Mel elaborates, "This is where the Founders come into the office, share their news and keep us updated with everything that is going on behind the scenes." It's a time for the team to catch up with their remote colleagues and strengthen their connections.

Tuesday, September 12th

Mel visits a new GXO site, and she is optimistic about the potential for collaboration. She enthusiastically shares, "I came away from that meeting feeling like this was going to be a really good relationship moving forward."

Wednesday, September 13th

Mel dedicates the day to attending a job fair at a DWP office in Bury. She notes, "It was a long and tiring day, but well worth it," as she interacts with individuals in need of support and networks with companies interested in recruiting.

Thursday, September 14th

An admin day at the office allows Mel to catch up on emails and gather feedback from the companies Tempus Novo collaborates with. She also takes time to connect with service users, reinforcing her commitment to their journeys of transformation.

Friday, September 15th

A much-needed work-from-home day provides Mel with a breather after a busy week of life-changing interactions.

Our hardworking, passionate and empathetic caseworkers are the driving force behind the ongoing success of our model and the strong relationships we are able to build and keep with our graduates, prison partners and corporate partners.

We’re extremely grateful to Mel and our whole team for their dedication and support!
